Secrets of baby wake ups

Welcome to this mini masterclass, we’re looking at the reasons why babies wake during the night. Not all wake-ups are the same!

When you know why your baby is waking, you can work on reducing those wake-ups.

1. False starts: Ever put your baby down for the night, only for them to wake up 20-60 minutes later? These are full starts. Possible causes? Overtiredness, too early bedtime, or even laying them down too awake/sleepy. Finding the right balance is key!

2. Waking more in the second part of the night: It’s normal for babies to have more wake-ups after a long stretch of sleep. Remember, we all wake up during the night (up to 10 times!).

3. Waking more after 4 am: After 4 AM, lighter sleep makes it easier to wake frequently. Don’t fret, it’s natural!

4. Big awake periods during the night: Is your baby NOT hungry or in need of a diaper change but still wide awake? This could be due to a sleep regression, a phase where development leaps disrupt sleep. Encourage them to practice new skills in bed to speed up the process!

5. Hunger: If your baby’s hungry during the night, feed them! Hunger disrupts sleep, and we all know none of us sleep well with a rumbling tummy. Remember, there’s no magic age or weight for sleeping through the night. Hunger is normal for babies up to a year old!

6. Independence is key: Babies who can self-soothe at bedtime are more likely to do so during nighttime wake-ups, especially when hunger or a diaper change isn’t the issue. If your baby can put themselves to sleep, they’ll have an easier time getting back to sleep later.

Understanding why your baby is waking up at night is crucial as you work towards fostering their independence. Remember, sleep is unique to each child and age!
